Highlights Of Our Learning:

  • Today during literacy centres, we introduced a new centre called, "Be the Teacher", ask me how it works.     Reese
  • We exchanged our books in the Learning Commons today.  Alyaa    Next week our learning commons day will be on Wednesday.  Please make sure your books are returned before Wednesday.
  • We made snowflakes out of loose parts.  Ask me all about it.  Ayden
  • This afternoon, we finished our "Hats on For Mental Health" in our visual journals.  We illustrated what we can do when we need to calm down.  Ask me what calms me down.  Abby
  • In gym, we had gym with grade 6's and Ms. Rinaldi's class joined us.  Abraham
  • We are all unique, ask me how I am unique like a snowflake.

FYI:
  • Next week, the students are participating in Mission Impossible in the gym.  Please make sure your child is wearing appropriate clothing for gymnastics.  Long hair needs to be tied back please.

Happy Literacy Day!

Update on our learning:


  • We went to Miss. Penonzek's room this afternoon and she read us a Curious George story.  Ask me what it was about.  Mrs. Swanson read to her grade 2/3 students.  Grayson
  • Today in music, we read a story about musical instruments.  We learned a new song that had hi and low words in it.  Reese
  • In math, we made ten and subtracted numbers from ten.  Alyaa
  • During recess, some of us made a human snowflake on the ground.  Mrs. Swanson took a photo of us.  Did you know a snowflake has 6 sides?  Abraham
  • This morning, Ms. Tourigny came and read us "The Kissing Hand" for Literacy Day.  Abby
  • We went over to Ms. Aebli's room and reviewed our snow facts together.  We came back to our classroom and brainstormed all the facts we know... "did you know?"  Nathan

Our Learning:

  • Today, we published our writing about winter.  We included what we "see","feel", "hear", "smell" and "taste".  We made our writing more descriptive by adding juicy words and otamatapaio words, ask me what they are.  We have some creative authors in grade one!
  • In math, we looked at the strategies "subtracting smaller neighbour numbers" e.g. 3-2, 9-8, 10-9, 15-14, and 19-18.  Students practiced by rolling numbers using dice and subtracting the smaller neighbour number.  
  • We had gym this morning.  Ask me what we are doing in gymnastics.  Thank you to those students who are wearing loose fitting clothes that are appropriate for gymnastics.  Please continue to wear clothes for gymnastics next week up until February 4th.
  • We had special lunch today, it was Taco time.
  • We worked on the "et" word family this week.  Ask me to show or say many "et" words I know.
  • Today we played "word detective" with a partner.  Many of us were able to find and say many words.

We had a lovely recess outside in the fresh air!! Finally!



Our Learning:

  • Today, we continued our writing about winter by exploring what we "FEEL" in the winter. We are working to make our writing more descriptive by adding juicy words. Together, we built on our first idea and made our writing more interesting by comparing these three sentences: "In the winter I feel snow." "In the winter I feel cold snow." "In the winter I feel cold snow that falls on my nose."
  • In math, we looked at the strategies "subtracting zero" and "subtracting one". We noted that when we subtract zero the answer does not change and when we subtract one it is like counting backwards by one or thinking about the number that comes right before. Students practiced rolling a 12 or 20 sided dice and then printing corresponding -0 and -1 equations.
  • We started to compile a list of words that express how we are unique. By reading the story "Cookies", we were able to list positive qualities such as responsible, respectful, helpful, proud, trustworthy, compassionate, generous, fair etc.
  • We had gym this morning.  Ask me what we started in gymnastics.
  • We had a special guest today volunteering, ask me who it was.

High Lights Of Our Learning:
This morning all of the grade 1 classes gathered in our room to warm up and do some yoga.
We learned a new math game this morning.  Many of us were detectives and tried to solve the sum for a word.  Ask me what a sum is.

We had a practice lockdown today.  Our grade 1 class was amazing and super safe.  All of us new what to do and we were super quiet.  

We had gym with the pm kindergarten class this afternoon.

In music we watched Fantasia.

has generously volunteered her talent and time to create our yearbook. So many thanks to Melinda Gombert for this.
Melinda has just finished designing the cover for the yearbook. 

If you haven’t purchased a yearbook yet and would like to do so, you can do through accessing your fees online
(MyCBE/PowerSchool account).  You will need to go to the Goods/Services tab to locate the optional fees,
double click the yearbook line, the fee will then attach to your account, or return this invoice indicating
that you wish to purchase the year book and the fee will be added to your account from the school office.
Deadline for purchase is February 28, 2020.

We made words this afternoon out of tiles.  The letters we used were:
a, e, f, n, o, l, k, s, w.  Can you solve the mystery word with your family using all the letters?

We were super creative in our visual journals because we made pop up pictures showing Mrs. Swanson what we learned.

Highlights Of Our Learning:
We talked about the important information that needs to be included on an invitation and then we created a "Save the Date" page that is coming home in folders today. Please note the date and plan to join us on February 6th as your child will be sharing and celebrating some of their grade one work with you.







  • It was so cold outside, we had indoor recess and lunch recess.  Alyaa
  • We sat in the gathering area for lunch today because there was a lego centre set up in the Learning Commons.  Abraham
  • This afternoon, we finished our Winter tree.  Abby
  • This morning we were super creative because Mrs. Swanson challenged us to make a snowflake out of pattern blocks.  Many of us were very creative.  Carson-We used pattern block shapes (hexagons, triangles, squares, diamonds and trapezoids) to create beautiful snowflakes. Each snowflake had six identical branches. Please ask your child what they have learned about snowflakes so far.
  • Ask me what literacy centre I was at today. 
  • Students learned one way to illustrate snowflakes and practiced on their invitations coming home.

-We have been busy learning about numbers and why they matter?  We have gone on a number search around the class and around the school.  Many of us came up with several wonders about numbers after our number hunt.  Please have your child look for numbers at home and out in the community.
-Winter arrived in December.  We brainstormed what we want to know about winter and what we know about the season.
-Snowflakes are very unique.  Ask your child what they know so far about snowflakes.
-Friday books came home today.  Please sign and send back on Monday.

Happy New Year!
All of us were very excited to great each other today and say, "Happy 2020!"

  • Today we were authors and we were writing about our winter break.  We were trying to add more detail by asking who, what, where, when and why?  Hannah

  • We read a New Year's poem.

  • Today was the warmest day of the week, please make sure your child is dressed for the weather.  Many students did not have mitts, snow pants or a hat today.  We want to have fun outside and be dressed appropriately.
